Who is visual therapy design for?
Who is Visual Therapy Design and who are we for?
We are an inclusive and creative interior design brand that centers our designs around identifying people’s needs as well as finding their voice and personal style. Design is ever-evolving, but one thing that it is consistent in is it creates specific design intent. The process of understanding and solving problems, while creating aesthetically pleasing and functional solutions.
At its core, design is about communication - it’s about using visuals and other sensory elements to convey a message to those on the receiving end of the design. It’s everywhere, and it’s our job to show you how you can be inspired anywhere and everywhere.
Now that the formalities of design are out of the way, here’s a bit more about me! My name is Ashante and I am the sole owner and operator of Visual Therapy Design, and it was created from my desire to see representation in interior design and from my time spent living in Portland, OR struggling with anxiety and depression. The only barometer of home design at the time was HGTV and TLC (early 2000s), and they were in their heavy home flipping era of design. It was a saturated market of home flippers, diy, and country chic that when anyone who asked what I went to school for— and I said interior design, they thought I was a decorator. If you remember Trading Spaces, it is very easy to understand why people conflated decorators and designers because the designers on that show didn’t always showcase what interior design actually entailed.
Fast forward to many years later and I’m working at IKEA, not utilizing my degree completely and wanting to find something creative to do with my degree that wasn’t the traditional way of showcasing interior design— I leaned more into the visual aids of interior design/design in general. I lived in Portland, OR for a few years and this is when the creative shift and awakening came about as I was dealing with depression and anxiety heavily during the last couple of years I lived there. I started making posts on social media that was a series of pictures that evoked specific emotions for me as I was processing all of these new feelings and emotions. Those posts resonated with other people as I was posting and the idea became more tangible in 2018. 2019 is when I officially made VTD a business, and 2023 is when I had my first official event to introduce the brand. Now here we are in 2024 and I’m just now posting this to the world to put myself out there.
Now that you’ve gotten to know a little bit about me, and understanding where this idea came from, I hope we can become better acquainted and I can help you with any of your design needs or questions in the future!
Cheers!
Ashanté
